Top 5 Plants for Creating Stunning Kokedama

If you've been to our kokedama class, I make it a point to say that making kokedama is something you can also do at home. It's truly a treat to be able to learn in person and I love giving my plant enthusiasts the tools to start making these beautiful living pieces at home. With that said, if you are looking to bring some flavor to your living space and are unsure of which plants to use, we have compiled a list of best plants below.

1. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Pothos, with its heart-shaped leaves and trailing vines, is like the rockstar of kokedama. It’s super easy to care for and can thrive in almost any light condition. Whether you’re a plant newbie or a seasoned pro, pothos will add a splash of vibrant green to your space, making your kokedama a standout feature.

2. Ferns (Nephrolepis exaltata)

Looking for something that brings a touch of the wild to your home? Ferns are your best bet. The Boston fern, in particular, is perfect for kokedama with its lush, feathery fronds. These plants love humidity and indirect light, creating a mini jungle vibe that’s perfect for indoor spaces.

3. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Spider plants are the life of the party when it comes to kokedama. They’re resilient, easy to care for, and produce cute little offshoots that dangle from the moss ball. Plus, they’re great for purifying the air, so you’re not just getting a cool plant; you’re getting a natural air purifier too.

4. Succulents (Various)

If you’re all about low-maintenance plants, succulents are the way to go. Varieties like Echeveria and Haworthia bring unique shapes and colors to your kokedama. Just give them plenty of light and a bit of water now and then, and you’ve got a stunning kokedama with minimal fuss.

5. Orchids (Phalaenopsis)

Want to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your kokedama? Orchids are the answer. Their exotic blooms are a real showstopper. While they might need a bit more TLC, the payoff is huge. Imagine a delicate orchid flower nestled in a moss ball – pure botanical bliss.
